- The Magpie Café — the famous one. Queue early or go at 3pm. Haddock and chips, obviously.
- Humble Pie 'n' Mash — tiny, brilliant, cash only. Two minutes from the door.
- Abbey Wharf — harbour views, good for a long lunch when it's raining.
- Sherlock's Coffee House — our morning coffee. Opens at 8.
Walks
- The 199 Steps to the Abbey start at the end of the street. Go at sunrise and you'll have it to yourself.
- Whitby to Robin Hood's Bay along the Cinder Track — 7 miles, mostly flat, bus X93 back.
- Sandsend beach walk at low tide — check the tide table in the kitchen drawer.

- Co-op on Church Street for milk and essentials (7am–10pm).
- Boots is on Baxtergate; the pharmacy closes at 6pm.
- Petrol: Tesco on the A171, 10 minutes by car.
